Dr Neil Roberts PhD, CBiol, FSB.

Neil is an experienced GCSE and A level biology teacher and founder of Imaginative Learning.  Neil has taught in several secondary schools and colleges, and is currently Head of Biology and Environmental Science at at an Outstanding Beacon Status College in the South East.

Neil is a biology A level principal examiner, author of several A level and GCSE course guides, and specialises in emergent technologies and accelerated learning techniques.  Neil is a chartered member and fellow of the Society of Biology.

Neil has used Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) to successfully motivate student learning since 2004.  His teachers network allows teachers from across the country to share and develop resources together. 'Moodle gives the teacher the ability to create a range of different activities to appeal to every kind of learner.  Because work is accessible from outside the classroom it really extends the boundaries of learning'

Intro - What moodle can do for you!

See examples of different moodle activities, course layouts and how to monitor use.(30 minutes)

Then choose 2 from the following list - 45 minutes each. Each session to include 30 minutes for staff to create resources relevant to the session.

Session 1: Setting up Moodle - Uploading and organising resources

•How to upload multiple files in a single click and make your moodle page engaging with pictues and labels.
•How to hide files and activities from view.
•How to show pictures using lightbox galleries
•Exploring the group feature

Session 2: Engaging Students - online assignments

• Create assignments that students complete online and upload into moodle to be marked.
•Tips on how to avoid compatability issues.

Session 3: Recapping Learning - Blog and Forum Features, and Wikis

• Students can use blogs to express their learning and post work and ask for help using forums and learn how to upload files for discussion or review.
•Create wikis so students can work together on key words or other assignments!

Session 4: Assessing Learning - Quizzes that mark and feedback automatically

•Create simple true/false, multiple choice quizzes or matching answer type for the more adventurous!
•Automatically marked with help and guidance on how to improve.
•How to use the gradebook feature

Session 5: Moodle on your Mobile

•Take a look at the new add-on for moodle which enables students to log on via their mobile phones
•Create your own subject specific flashcards to help students to learn key topics.
